Embedding a Passion for Quality across the Lifecycle

Geoff Thompson

Using case studies this presentation will look at how different testing can be when everyone has a reason to buy into quality, and how this positively builds people's perception of testing - taking testing from being seen as an overhead to becoming a valued and passionately adhered to stage of the project!
We will look at how a passion for quality should not just sit within the Test team, but how with the right incentives, testing can ensure this can be embedded at every stage of the lifecycle, together with showing the benefits that this approach can achieve.

TMMi - How are we doing as an Industry?

Geoff Thompson

The concept of a Test Maturity Model was originally presented way back in 1999 by the Institute of Illinois, it wasn't until 2005 however that the Software Testing Industry decided to look at this in more detail, and consider how it could help improve what we do.

In early 2008 the TMMi Foundation was created as a non profit organisation with the overall goal of developing, and managing the Test Maturity Model integrated (TMMi). This international team has been developing the TMMi Model and establishing the controls and processes around any assessment based upon the model ensuring the model is brought up to date and is relevant to today's organisations.

This presentation will provide an overview of the TMMi Foundation and the TMMi Model, but will focus on a recent survey of over 100 companies, that indicates the state of the nation for software testing worldwide.

We will look at all areas of the test process and discuss what the results actually mean, and what we need to do to smarten what we do in the weaker areas.

This will be augmented with some real life experiences from the speaker (the Chairman of the TMMi Management Executive).

Taking the Risk of Failure out of Process Improvement

Geoff Thompson

Geoff has managed many process improvement projects and can safely say that it is a significant risk to put yourself in a position of championing/managing change without any structure surrounding where you are, where you want to get to and what the benefits are. Within Software Testing this seems more apparent than Geoff has seen in many other IT disciplines. Far too many test improvement projects fail to deliver any benefit, or at least any benefit outside of testing, in most instances with better planning and structure they could have been real successes.

Overview and benefits of the Test Maturity Model integrated (TMMi)

Martin Adcock

There are many models that focus on helping organisations improve their software engineering. We will look specifically at the background to the Test Maturity Model integrated (TMMi) and why Management are adopting it as a standard for assessing test maturity at a project, department or organisational level. Using the easy to understand output I will show how it helps identify process strengths and weaknesses as well as the most important areas of improvement and the tangible benefits that can be expected.

Brian Wells, Principal Experimentus Consultant will present: "Test Process Improvement - Measurement is Critical to Success!"

Abstract: To be more efficient, effective and competitive, organisations need to understand the capabilities of their development, test and quality processes. Using experience and analysis the presenter will review the benefits of process improvement and specifically the benefits that can be obtained by reviewing and improving how we test using the Test Maturity Model integrated (TMMi). We will also look at how measurement supports TMMi.

Test Process improvement is a significant project in its own right and as such needs to be managed in a way that ensures that the right changes are made and the benefit is realised. Once you have identified what needs to change and how, how do you see that the changes are delivering benefit? You need to measure before, during and after change is implemented! A cornerstone for effective change is measurement.

Often this is using the toolbox of measurement practices coupled to the requirement of the organisation to introduce a structured measurement programme into an organisation and assisting organisations to effectively analyse and use this data for all dynamic and historical data analysis and presentation needs.

During the presentation, we will look at how change and the potential benefits of change are indentified and using cases studies, see how measurement was implemented and the developing data collateral used to demonstrate realisation of these benefits and how this was very influential in ensuring effective, long-term change occurred.

Testing - A Risk Mitigation Process

Mike Doel

Testing represents a significant part of the development budget and poor test processes can often lead to out of control spending and poor software quality. One of the main reasons that we test is to mitigate product risk. Testing achieves this in the dynamic sense by providing a measurement of software quality, or in the static sense by the review of requirements, specifications or software code. So if testing is a risk mitigation process it is imperative that the test activity should be driven by the analysis of the risks. This presentation outlines the principles of Risk Based Testing and describes uncomplicated techniques which can be used to introduce RBT to any test process, with minimal impact on the development project. Finally the presentation describes the additional benefits which are realised when using RBT.

Assessing Test Process Capability using TMMi

Brian Wells

The Test Maturity Model Integration (TMMi) is rapidly growing in use throughout the world. It has been developed to complement the existing CMMI framework. Its growing popularity is based upon it being the only independent test process measurement method, and the simple presentation of maturity levels that it provides. The independent TMMi Foundation initiative has been established with the sole intent of elaborating the TMMi standard reference model and developing a standard TMMi assessment and certification method, with the aim of enabling the standard's consistent deployment and the collection of industry metrics. This presentation outlines the origins of the TMMi standard reference model and an overview of its structure and content, how it supports Software Engineering capability models and explains the benefits of TMMi and why it is needed: including how the TMMi model can be used to assist in identifying and implementing a structured test process improvement road map.

The Truth Uncovered!

Brian Wells

Are your test and test-related quality processes efficient and effective? Should you care? In the final quarter of 2008, Experimentus initiated a world-wide survey allowing organisations to submit data to anonymously allow us to evaluate industry level test process maturity against the Test Maturity Model integrated (TMMi) model.

The analysis of the first quarter's data (Q4, 2008) of over 100 organisations from many different industry sectors will be presented. This will provide a picture of test process maturity and does contain interesting surprises! To provide additional background to the survey results, the presentation will give an overview of the TMMi model and how it can be used to assist in identifying and implementing a structured test process improvement road map supported by examples from client engagements. It will also outline that effective measurement is very important before, during and as part of the ongoing process of improvement.

TMMi Workshop

20 May 2009

Hosted by Geoff Thompson & Brian Wells of Experimentus

At the Royal Automobile Club, 89 Pall Mall, London

Over the decades there have been many process improvement models, including SPICE, CMM and CMM(I). These models focus on helping organisations improve their overall software engineering process capabilities, but don't cover testing and software quality processes in sufficient detail. This is where the Testing Maturity Model integrated (TMMi) can help

Workshop Overview

The aim of this workshop is to provide background and to help the attendees understand how to deliver qualitative and quantitative process improvements using the TMMi model. It explains in detail what TMMi is, and why it is different from other models.

To help understand the benefits of the TMMi model, the day will also include a quick assessment which will provide an indicative view of where within the 5 levels of TMMi, each attendees company, project or team is currently positioned. Throughout the day we will relate our experiences from the delivery of numerous Experimentus TMMi assessments and provide practical remedies and strategies to make an effective difference.

Finally there is a review of a recent TMMi survey undertaken by Experimentus to obtain a view of the trends in the software testing industry today.
