Applying Generic Goals through eleborations

When assessing each Process Area it is necessary to review the specific elaboration of the Generic Practice that is appropriate for the particular Process Area.

As an example let us look at:

Generic Goal 2 Institutionalise a Managed Process

and the associated

Generic Practice 2.2 Plan the process – Establish and maintain the plan for performing the test policy and strategy process.

For Process Area 2.1 Test Policy & Strategy, the elaboration for this Generic practice is:

  • The plan for performing the test policy and strategy process can be included (or referenced by) the organisation’s quality plan or test process improvement plan.

For Process Area 2.2 Test Planning, the elaboration is:

  • Typically, the plan for performing the test planning process is included in the project plan, which is described in the CMMI Project Planning Process Area.

For Process Area 2.3 Test Monitoring and Control, the elaboration is:

  • Typically, the plan for performing the test monitoring and control process is included in the test plan, which is described in the TMMi Test Planning Process Area.

For Process Area 2.4 Test Design and Execution, the elaboration is:

  • Typically, the plan for performing the test design and execution process is included in the test plan, which is described in the TMMi Test Planning Process Area. The activities for test design and execution are explicitly scheduled as part of the test plan.

For Process Area 2.5 Test Environments, the elaboration is:

  • Typically, the plan for performing the test environment process is included in the test plan, which is described in the TMMi Test Planning Process Area. In a project where the test environment is more complex, and therefore often requires more resources, a specific test environment plan may be established. The plan typically describes amongst others the implementation process of the test environment requirements in detail.

As can be seen, while the the Generic Practice is looking for a common element, the elaboration provides the Process Area (context) specific description of what the assessment is looking to have demonstrated within that Process Area for the Generic Practice to be satisfied.
