Process Area 2.3 – Test Monitoring and Control

The purpose of the Test Monitoring and Control Process Area is to provide an understanding of test progress and product quality. This is so that appropriate corrective actions may be taken if test progress deviates significantly from plan or product quality deviates significantly from expectations.

An essential part of Test Monitoring and Control is test project risk management.

Test project risk management is performed in order to identify (as early as possible) and provide solutions for problems that could undermine the test plan.

When performing project risk management it is also important to identify problems that are beyond the responsibility of testing so they can be allocated to the appropriate person for mitigation.

Some points to consider when looking at this Process Area:

  • Is there an approach to monitoring and controlling the test process through metrics?
  • Are data items identified, collected, and analysed?
  • Are quality and progress reported on?
  • Is the information used to monitor, (re-)evaluate risks and undertake mitigating actions?
