Specific and Generic Goals are scored by examining the indicative ratings for their associated Specific and Generic Practices and coming to a consensus amongst the assessment team as to the most appropriate rating for the individual Goal as a whole.
Note that in the diagram above, the percentages that were appropriate when scoring Specific and Generic Practices have now disappeared. Percentages not appropriate when scoring process components at the Goal level or higher.
Let us have a look at some examples of scoring Goals. In each example we will use Process Area 2.3 – Test Monitoring and Control to see how the rating of its three Specific Goals is scored by looking at the ratings of the relevant Specific Practices.
In this first example, below, the scoring of the Goals is easy: All Specific Practices are scored ‘Fully’, so it is a simple decision to make that the associated Specific Goals are also rated as ‘Fully’.
In this example, below, the scoring of the Goals is still easy: All Specific Practices are scored ‘Largely’, so it is a simple decision to make that the associated Specific Goals are also rated as ‘Largely’.
In this example, below, the scoring of the Goals is a bit more difficult : Some Specific Practices are scored ‘Largely’ and some ‘Fully’, so we have to take a bit more time to decide whether the associated Specific Goals are also rated as ‘Largely or ‘Fully’.
For SG 1, the Specific Practices are almost evenly divided between ‘Largely’ and ‘Fully’. On balance it would seem a fair overall rating for this SG is ‘Largely’.
For SG 2, only one of the Specific Practices is scored ‘Largely’ – the other six are scored ‘Fully’. On balance it would seem a fair overall rating for this SG is ‘Fully’.
For SG 3, the Specific Practices are two ‘Fully’ and one ‘Largely’. There may be some argument as to whether the overall score should be ‘Largely’ or ‘Fully’. In this case, for this Organisation in their particular circumstances, it is considered that, overall, they do not manage their corrective actions to closure all of the time, so a ‘Largely’ has been scored.
There may be many cases where scoring is not clear-cut. Scoring Goals is not a simple mathematical exercise, but all the circumstances have to be taken into consideration to arrive at a fair score that truly represents the position.
